A vital part of any cathodic protection (CP) system is its cable. All CP systems use special cables to operate. Conductors that are typically used for underground service are made of solid or stranded copper, rated at 600 volts, with a variety of insulation materials designed for the type of electrical and chemical exposure to be encountered.
Conductors are rated on their ampacity under certain temperature and service conditions. Insulation values also vary depending on wet or dry conditions.
On an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system, any defect in the insulation exposing the conductors to the electrolyte will cause corrosion and eventual failure of the cable at the point of the defect.

XLPE (Cross Linked
Cross-linked polyethylene is a compound form of PE, which enhances mechanical stability.
Sheath or Inner Sheath
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
Available in many compound forms but those used in cable manufacture are plasticized to allow extrusion techniques and subsequent flexibility.
PE (Polyethylene)
Available in various forms, the most widely used description being "low and high" density, with additional designations to denote the melt-flow index (MFI).
HMWPE (High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)
Using a particular polymerization technique a high-density form of polyethylene is produced. Resistance against solvents and water can be classified as excellent.
PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride e.g. Kynar)
A high performance, mechanically strong fluorocarbon, having excellent chemical resistance that makes it ideal for deep ground beds and feeders to underwater anodes. PVF is specially recommended for environments where for chlorine present.

Protect the cable from mechanical damage and avoid the use of protective conduit.
